S y n o p s i s :
A sake brewery of long standing in Kanazawa is deep in the red. The owner’s only son Sagara Shuichi, an elite banker, resigns from the bank because of something that came up, and decides to stake his life on making sake. Grasping at straws, he clings to the legendary master brewer, Washio Yusaku. However, Yusaku is the man feared as an ogre. Shuichi is prepared to be “eaten by the ogre”, but he is thrust into a difficult position when he sinks further into debt because of Yusaku’s pursuit of “perfect sake making”. Moreover, the brewers working for Yusaku are strangers to sake making. They are men and women who have lost their places to go for their own reasons, and have moved in with the sake brewery. One of them is Shuichi’s cousin, Naoki. In the middle of preparing the daiginjo sake on which the fate of the sake brewery rests, an unusual and unpredicted change takes place before Naoki’s eyes. Will the sake brewery be turned around when the drops of liquid of their quest flow?

In 2002 (Heisei 14), public relations officer Mikami Yoshinobu of D Prefectural Police, is having an intense confrontation with the correspondents’ club, over the issue of the anonymity of a perpetrator in a traffic accident that caused serious injuries. Meanwhile, the public relations office is informed by the top brass that the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department commissioner’s visit to the home of the family of the victim in “64”, an important unsolved case with its statute of limitation about to run out, has been decided one week later. The case which the police refer to internally as “64” is the kidnapping and murder of Shoko-chan which took place in just seven days in January 1989 (Showa 64). It was the worst in D Prefectural Police’s history. Mikami is under strict orders to obtain the family’s consent as well as to give the reporters’ questions beforehand. The visit is meant to emphasise the police’s resolve to put all effort into solving the case. However, the victim’s father, Amemiya Yoshio, rejects the commissioner’s visit and the correspondents’ club refuses to cooperate for the commissioner’s press conference. Mikami is torn between the top brass, which operates on organisational principles, and the correspondents’ club. Plot
Kayoko Akimoto, a senior student in high school, adept at practically anything she does and makes good grades. She has her mind set on entering a university in Tokyo. Takumi Nishi, who is a member of the baseball team, can’t keep his eyes off her. He is unable to get over his feelings for her that he has harbored since junior high school. One day after school, the ace pitcher of the baseball team, Tomizo Sasaki, says to Takumi in a joking way, “I like Kayoko.” Takumi’s feelings for Kayoko are unrequited, and the distance between her and Tomizo becomes closer.
Meanwhile, Kei Shirata is always listening to music in the corner of the classroom. Her dream is to someday become a writer specializing in music. One day, she becomes aware of Kazuya Tsujimoto’s presence, a boy in her class who plays in a rock band at school. She senses a similar vibe from him as herself, of someone who “feels” the music. By chance, they end up spending some time together, and have a great time chatting about their favorite music. “I’ve never hit it off so well with someone,” says Kazuya, and suddenly, the world looks like a much brighter and more vivid place for Kei. Their final school festival is coming up. Kazuya asks Kei to write the lyrics for a song that he has written for the first time, and this triggers various dramas in the seniors’ lives.
The seasons change as the feelings of these five seniors intersect each other. Their graduation day, the day they say good-bye, is drawing near.
