Based on a play by Hideo Tsuchiya, "Yaku Sanju no Uso" has the same sophisticated, witty angle of attack as Otani's "Avec Mon Mari" (1999) and "Travail" (2002), films in which intimate enemies stripped away each other's masks to amusing and revealing effect. But the jokes in "Yaku," which may have tickled ribs when delivered from the stage, fall dead on the screen. The audience I saw the film with at the TIFF screening was, in the immortal words of Lenny Bruce, like an oil painting. The silence was so deafening I began to listen for anything resembling a snicker or chuckle (it certainly wasn't coming from me). After an hour or so I finally heard a laugh that sounded oddly angry -- a why-have-you- waited-so-damned-long-to-be-funny laugh.
One problem is that Otani makes little effort to widen the action beyond the gang's compartment or otherwise break the trance of the constant talk-talk. Another is the lack of tension or stakes -- no one is threatened with anything more than a put-down. By the end of the gang's interminable trip I was hoping for anything -- a card trick -- to break the tedium. Next time, I'll book the sleeper. -- Japan Times

Plot
A samurai named Soza (Junichi Okada) has lived in the modest Edo shanty town for the past 3 years in search of his father’s killer. His father was killed in a petty dispute over the game “Go” and his last words to Soza were to revenge his death. Soza while honoring his father’s wishes has also been partaking in activities that are of interest to him, but unusual for a Samurai. This would include running a private school for the neighborhood kids and keeping birds as pets. He’s also become quietly attached to a widow named Osae (Rie Miyazawa) and her 8 year old son Shinbo. It’s also revealed through humorous scenes in the film that Soza is a terrible swordsman and actually scared of battle. When he finally locates his father’s killer Soza he now has to weight the teachings of his Samurai background against his own moral convictions.
Running parallel with Soza’s story are the various stories of the shanty town residents. The most notable story involves the fabled 47 Ronins. The 47 Ronins were a group of samurai that were leaderless after their master was forced to commit suicide because of an assault on a court official. The ronins then blended back into society, while secretly conspiring to exact revenge for their dishonored master. They patiently wait for over a year to launch their attack – all the while knowing they would be sentenced to death for their actions.

Synopsis
Le Bon Vivre is an intriguing restaurant. The owner and waitress, Ikeyama Juri, accepts only one group of customers a day. The food that Bon Vivre serves is very special. It is “lost food” that no longer exists in this world. The talented chef, Terayashiki Renichi, is Le Bon Vivre’s pride. He will fully reproduce “lost food” such as the food of a shop that is no longer around or the food of a person who is now deceased in response to all sorts of customer requests. It is the role of second chef, Oze Kiyoi, to support Terayashiki and do research on the “lost food”. He will gather information which covers a wide variety of such food. Many people who have heard the rumours about this restaurant try to make a reservation one way or another. However, very few people are able to get a table. They have one thing in common. The customers that get invited to Le Bon Vivre all have struggles, worries or stand at the crossroads in life. Many of them will look ahead and start a brand new life again after eating the reproduced food here. This is the origin of “Shimeshi”, the name of the cuisine served at this restaurant. It is “lost food” that no longer exists in this world. The talented chef, Terayashiki Renichi, is Le Bon Vivre’s pride. He will fully reproduce “lost food” such as the food of a shop that is no longer around or the food of a person who is now deceased in response to all sorts of customer requests. It is the role of second chef, Oze Kiyoi, to support Terayashiki and do research on the “lost food”. He will gather information which covers a wide variety of such food. Many people who have heard the rumours about this restaurant try to make a reservation one way or another. However, very few people are able to get a table. They have one thing in common. The customers that get invited to Le Bon Vivre all have struggles, worries or stand at the crossroads in life. Many of them will look ahead and start a brand new life again after eating the reproduced food here. This is the origin of “Shimeshi”, the name of the cuisine served at this restaurant.
